IELTS Writing Task 1 Part 3: Static Data & Tables
Static Data Synthesis: Comparative Tables, Multiple Charts & Proportions
Unlike dynamic charts, static prompts provide data at a single frozen moment in time (e.g. data for the year 2024 only). There are no trends, rises, or falls. Writing "sales grew" on a static chart is a catastrophic factual error. Instead, success depends entirely on comparative structures, rankings, proportions, and fractions.
Expressing Percentages as Natural Proportions
| Percentage Value | Natural Proportion / Fraction Expression | Band 8.5+ Model Sentence |
|---|---|---|
| 75% | Three out of four / Exactly three-quarters | "Three-quarters of all surveyed households owned a personal vehicle." |
| 52% | Just over half / A slim majority | "A slim majority of international students selected homestay accommodations." |
| 32% | Approximately a third / Just under one-third | "Renewable power accounted for roughly one-third of overall national generation." |
| 4% | A negligible proportion / A tiny fraction | "Hydroelectric energy constituted a negligible fraction, at merely 4%." |
