IELTS Speaking Series • Part 1

Introduction, Fluency Foundations & Spontaneous Flow

⏱ 4–5 Minutes 🎯 Familiar Topics 📊 Natural Intonation

Part 1 of the IELTS Speaking interview is your vital opportunity to establish an authentic conversational cadence with the examiner. Lasting 4 to 5 minutes, this segment covers familiar topics like your hometown, current work or studies, leisure routines, and personal preferences. Band 8.5 candidates master the art of spontaneous, natural expansion without sounding robotic or rehearsed.

The 'Extend by Three' Formula

Examiners penalize one-sentence answers as an inability to maintain fluent speech, but overlong speeches sound like memorized essays. The golden mean for Part 1 is the Extend by Three rule: 1 direct answer sentence followed by 2 to 3 supporting sentences containing reasoning, a personal anecdote, or a contrasting preference.

Examiner Prompt:

"Do you prefer living in a house or an apartment?"

❌ Band 5.5 Response (Short & Dry):

"I live in an apartment. It has two rooms and a small kitchen. I like it because it is close to my university."

✅ Band 8.5 Response (Fluent & Dynamic):

"Currently, I’m renting a high-rise studio right in the city center. While it’s certainly compact, the trade-off is unbeatable convenience since I can walk to the campus library within ten minutes. That said, eventually I’d love to settle down in a detached suburban house with a private garden."
