Anthropic Launches Model Context Protocol (MCP) as an Open Standard for AI Agent Tooling
Anthropic has announced the open-source release of the Model Context Protocol (MCP), a universal protocol designed to standardize how Large Language Models and intelligent agent systems interact with external developer tools, file systems, databases, and continuous integration environments.
How MCP Solves Tool Fragmentation
Traditionally, every IDE and agent runtime developed bespoke JSON schemas and custom API bindings for tooling. MCP provides a standardized JSON-RPC 2.0 communication format structured around three core concepts:
- Resources: Uniform file-like data feeds that provide contextual documents to language models.
- Prompts: Pre-packaged interaction templates exposed directly by tools and servers.
- Tools: Executable functions allowing the agent to inspect servers, execute database queries, or run automated test harnesses with explicit user authorization boundaries.
Adoption from IDEs, database providers, and tool creators makes MCP a foundational specification for modern agentic pair-programming workflows.
