Task 1 Architecture, 150-Word Structure & Scoring Criteria

⏱ 20 Minutes 🎯 150+ Words 📊 4-Paragraph Blueprint

Academic Writing Task 1 requires candidates to write a factual report summarizing, describing, or explaining visual data (line graphs, bar charts, pie charts, tables, process diagrams, or comparative maps) within 20 minutes. Scoring Band 8.0+ hinges on crafting an impeccable Overview paragraph that isolates the dominant trends and contrasts without getting bogged down in minute figures.

The 4-Paragraph Master Template

Paragraph 1: Introduction (Paraphrase)

1 Sentence (~25 words)

Paraphrase the prompt completely using synonyms, clause restructuring, or active/passive transformation: "The line graph illustrates changes in the proportion of renewable electricity generated across four European nations between 2000 and 2020."

Paragraph 2: The Overview (The Heart of Task 1)

2 Sentences (~40 words)

Highlight the main macroscopic trends and key anomalies. Crucial rule: Never include exact numbers or statistics in the Overview. Keep it purely conceptual: "Overall, while all countries experienced growth in clean energy adoption, Germany demonstrated the steepest surge, whereas Italy consistently lagged behind the cohort."

Paragraphs 3 & 4: Detailed Body Analysis

2 Paragraphs (~90 words)

Group the visual information logically (e.g. upward trends in Body 1, downward/plateaued trends in Body 2). Support all assertions with accurate numerical values, comparative data, and exact dates.
