In this capstone guide, we deconstruct the fourth scoring criterion: Pronunciation. You don’t need a native British or North American accent to achieve Band 8.5 or 9.0; what examiners reward is phonological control—meaningful sentence stress, expressive intonation contours, and natural chunking. We conclude with a full authentic interview transcript analyzed against official Cambridge assessment rubrics.

Sentence Stress & Thought Group Chunking

Flat, syllable-timed delivery sounds robotic and obscures meaning. English is a stress-timed language: content words (nouns, main verbs, adjectives) are elongated and stressed, while structural function words (articles, prepositions, auxiliary verbs) are contracted into weak forms.

Exemplar Chunking & Tonic Pitch Movement:

[If you examine the data closely /] ↗
[what's particularly striking /] ↗
[is the sudden drop in consumer confidence /] ↘
[which completely paralyzed local retail businesses.] ↘

Notice how the pitch rises on non-final dependent clauses (↗) to signal continuity, and drops decisively (↘) at the end of the thought unit to convey authority.
